    Requirements

The successful candidate must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application, a high school graduate or GED holder, with 2 or more years of college preferred. At least one year of customer service experience in the service industry is required, such as in retail, hospitality, food, teaching, education, aviation, or social service. Candidates must be able to speak in a clear, concise, and organized manner, loudly enough to be heard in an emergency, and must demonstrate the ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently. Fluency in German is also required. The candidate must have the ability to hear all types and ranges of sound and effectively communicate during high-stress situations such as aircraft evacuation, security threats, delays, medical emergencies, severe weather conditions, and turbulence. A professional appearance, excellent grooming standards, and willingness to follow uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines are essential. Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck, including behind the ear, but visible tattoos are allowed on the arms, wrists, legs, and feet as long as they are not larger than a credit card or employee badge (3.5 inches long x 2.24 inches wide) or are covered by standard uniform pieces, and must not be offensive in nature. Decorative covers, adornments, or jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not allowed. Candidates must be able to proficiently operate electronic devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops. A valid passport with at least 18 months of remaining validity is required prior to application, and the candidate must possess the physical passport book, not just a pending application. Applicants must be eligible to travel globally without restrictions and must identify and verify their own travel eligibility for all United destinations.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and willing to work a flexible schedule supporting United’s 24/7 operations, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Flight attendant trainees must successfully complete a water evacuation drill in a pool during training.

Physical requirements include the ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, lift heavy objects like luggage into overhead bins, and push or pull a beverage cart weighing up to 250 lbs. Candidates must be able to pass a functional reach assessment with a combined 76-inch vertical and 43.5-inch horizontal reach (simultaneous), without shoes on, and be able to sit in an assigned jump seat with the seatbelt and shoulder harness fastened. Serving and/or selling food and beverages professionally is required.

Pre-employment requirements include passing a DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision and hearing tests. The candidate must pass DOT/FAA pre-employment and random drug tests, noting that medical and recreational marijuana is prohibited due to the safety-sensitive nature of the role. A 10-year background check, including a criminal history check, is mandatory. The background must not prohibit travel to or from any United destinations. For example, a DWI/DUI conviction within the last 10 years may prevent entry into Canada unless the candidate has obtained a Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) from the Canadian government.
